Dubrovnik — A Croatian Jewel

Centuries of insight and accord make this medieval town the pearl of Southern Dalmatia, whose spirit and history are worthy of our deepest admiration. The luminous city at the foot of hill Srd is a highlight of the Adriatic and the whole of Croatia.

The town’s greatest attraction simply lies in its spectacular appearance, its medieval character, all combined with the rich and colorful vegetation of the Mediterranean region. Here, history, culture, and nature all meld into one harmonic unity. Apart from its historic atmosphere, Dubrovnik offers a remarkable number of cultural programs. Dubrovnik Summer Festival is a medley of performances and concerts taking place in the open air during warm Dubrovnik evenings. If you feel like spending a lazy day in the sun, you might luxuriate on one of Dubrovnik's city beaches; but, better yet—take the ferry to Lokrum Island. This island is a national park, with a rocky nudist beach, a botanical garden and the ruins of a medieval Benedictine monastery.

Founded 1300 years ago, Dubrovnik's appeal lies in the majestic old town of Stari Grad, with its marble-paved squares, steep cobbled streets, tall houses, convents, churches, palaces, fountains and museums, all cut from the same light-colored limestone. Dubrovnik’s city walls were built between the 8th and 16th Centuries. Just inside the walls, the Franciscan Monastery houses the oldest European pharmacy, which has been operating since 1391. One of its fortresses, built on a high cliff above the sea, bears an inscription that reflects the spirit of this old town: NON BENE TOTO LIBERTAS VENDIAURO (Freedom is not to be given away for all treasures of the world)
